Reducing the risk of homelessness through proactive and preventative measures will continue to be a primary focus. Ending the trap of homelessness will be the ultimate outcome. The work of Medicine Hat Community Housing Society is possible in part because of your financial support. Become a part of the ultimate outcome to end homelessness. A charitable tax receipt will be provided for donations over $20.

Volunteer your time.
Volunteer your time at a local shelter or community service like the McMan Inn-Between Youth Shelter, Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter, The Salvation Army, or The Medicine Hat Food Bank.
Help lessen the stigma around homelessness.
Educate yourself, your family and your community about the issue of homelessness and the factors that can lead to homelessness.
A variety of different factors can contribute to an individual’s experience of homelessness. Often, people experience homelessness when all other options have been exhausted, and/or they are dealing with circumstances that make it difficult to maintain housing. Some of the obstacles that may lead people to their experiences of homelessness include:
Eviction
The affordable housing crisis
Coping with mental illnesses or addictions, which makes it difficult to maintain independent housing
Overall, the myths that exist about homelessness are generalizations of a more complicated reality. Every homeless individual faces a different and complex set of circumstances. It is the responsibility of the general public to educate themselves about issues related to homelessness. This will hopefully result in sensitive and compassionate conversations and solutions to homelessness.
We are able to fulfill our mission of housing individuals and families thanks to the support of local landlords and property management companies. To support tenants both those in social housing and the private market, along with the landlord community, we have compiled the following resources.

Did you know?
Since the onset of our Plan in 2009, 1722 unique individuals (1285 adults and 437 children) have been housed through housing first programs in community.
This number does not include those re-housed through other homeless-serving funded programs and services.
Shelter utilization is down 64% overall in community since 2009.
Utilization of public systems for those in housing first has seen:
- A 67% reduction in the number of days in jail
- A 35% increase in court appearances
- A 32% reduction in the number of days spent in hospital
Funded programs serve over 1750 unique individuals every year.
